About us

Karate is an excellent form of self defense; it builds confidence, self discipline, self respect, respect for others and is also great for building physical fitness.

Instructors at Stoke Karate Academy focus on the enjoyment of the art of karate but at the same time maintaining the spirit and discipline of traditional karate-do. Whether it be for fun, fitness, developing technique or competition Stoke Karate Academy offers it all.

Beginners always welcome

Stoke Karate academy recruits throughout the year and new beginners are always welcome. Beginner’s classes run every Monday night at 6 pm.

Sensei Phil Shufflebotham 6th Dan

40 years + Karate experience
Started Training in 1981 under Sensei Rozanna Woolfe 3rd Dan & Roy Eldon 5th Dan.
Attained 1st Dan Black belt at the age of 12 (1985)
Attained 5th Dan Black Belt under Soke Grand Master Haruyoshi Yamada.
President and World Chief Instructor of the Shito-Ryu Shukokai Karate Union.
Attained 6th Dan Black Belt under Paul Graham 9th Dan Hanshi Shukoksi ShitoRyu Karate Alliance
35 years teaching experience in Shukokai Karate.
Over 20 National & Regional Championships including Kumite (Free-fighting) & Kata (Pre-arranged forms): plus European & World cup medals as follows:

Sensei Andy Booth 1st Dan

Started training in 1988 under Sensei Roy Elden 5th Dan and Sensei Rozanna Woolfe 3rd Dan then studied under Sensei Phil Shufflebotham 6th Dan.
Attained 1st Dan in 1993 at the age of 23.
Over 30 years training and teaching in Shukokai karate.
